Born on October 28, 1935 to Harold Duncan Greaves and Theresa Rose Price, Gary led a life marked by compassion, dedication, and a deep love for his family.
Gary attended the University of Miami, where he was a three-year starter for the Hurricanes’ football team (’56 -’58) and a multi-year, All American candidate who played both offensive and defensive tackle. Up until this time, he was considered to be the most prolific defensive player in Hurricane history, breaking the school’s all-time career tackling record during his junior season. He had achieved this feat in just two years, something that took all previous record holders to achieve in three. It was during this time when he met the love of his life, Carolyn, whom he married in 1963. Carolyn remained by his side all the way until his passing.
After graduating from the University of Miami, Gary went on to play for the 1960 Houston Oilers’ AFL Championship team, spending one season in the NFL before leaving to serve in the United States Army during the Berlin Crisis.
Gary was a longtime educator and entrepreneur, touching the lives of countless students and colleagues throughout his career, leaving a lasting impact on each one.
Outside of his professional life, Gary was a pillar of strength for his family. His warm smile, witty sense of humor, and genuine kindness endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, cherishing every moment spent with his loved ones.
In addition to his dedication to education and devotion to family, Gary found solace and strength in his spiritual beliefs and his faith served as a light throughout his life's journey.
Gary Chalfant Greaves leaves behind a legacy of love and loyalty, and will continue to shine brightly through the lives he touched. His death was preceded by his mother, father, and two brothers. He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn, his three children, two grandchildren, two sisters, and one brother.
