Gerald Thomas Lowery

Gerald Thomas Lowery aka Nandad aka Coach, age 84, passed away on Thursday, March 28th, 2024, in Llano, Texas. Gerald was born on November 7,1939 in Mobile, Alabama to Paul and Ruby Lowery. He graduated high school in Vidor, Texas before achieving success as a collegiate football player at Lamar Tech University and Henderson State University. Gerald obtained a bachelor’s degree at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas and later obtained a master's degree in Kinesiology at Sam Houston State University. He had a successful career as a high school football coach in several cities throughout Texas for many years, then spent several years in the brick import business, and then went into the cotton business where he retired from Lowery Cotton Company.

Gerald was a positive influence in the life of many, especially his children, grandchildren and former players. He was always the first to brag about their successes and accomplishments. Besides his annual Big Bend trips, one of his favorite vacations was the yearly reunion of the 1968 Irving High School Football Team.

Gerald was a devoted father, loving grandfather and loyal friend. He was an avid sports enthusiast especially when it came to high school and college football and all types of golf. Gerald enjoyed traveling the rural United States in his Jeeps and had a fond place in his heart for Ireland. He never met a stranger and brought laughter and joy to all who knew him with his clever remarks and sharp sense of humor. He was one of a kind.

Gerald is preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Lowery, father, Paul Lowery Sr., brother, Paul Lowery Jr. and his beloved dog, John Wayne. He is survived by his significant other, Judye Stewart and his three daughters: Jennifer Lowery Willis and husband Matthew, Robin Adams and Julie Cantu and husband Epi; two bonus sons: Roy Halmicek, Jr. and Joshua Sherman; four grandchildren: Zachary Adams and wife Katherine, Makayleigh Adams, Abigail Cantu and Luke Cantu. He will also be missed greatly by his dog, Beau Diddley.

The family would like to send a heartfelt thanks to everyone who has offered their condolences during this difficult time. They also express their deepest gratitude to the amazing nurses at Baylor Scott & White in Marble Falls, Lakeway, and Llano for their care of Gerald during his final month.

Family and friends are invited to an Irish Wake on Saturday, April 20th from 3-6 pm at Gerald’s home. To honor him, the family asks you wear green to celebrate his life.
