Dr. Matthew A. Timm, Ph.D., died on September 30, 2025, at the age of 81. Born May 20, 1944, Matt lived a life defined by gentle strength, deep curiosity, and devotion to children and families. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor, scholar, musician, and friend—a man whose intelligence and thoughtful kindness made people feel seen and safe.
Matt grew up in Arkansas as one of six children in a close family. As a young man he showed a steady sense of responsibility and leadership, working multiple jobs to support himself and help his family, and serving in student leadership roles that hinted at the advocate he would become.
A pragmatic scholar, Matt earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, then pursued graduate training at George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, completing an M.A. in Special Education and a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology and Special Education. His path was fueled by strong moral conviction and an insistence on fairness. These ideals had been instilled during his childhood and later shaped by early involvement in civil rights and peace efforts.
Matt’s professional life became internationally influential through his pioneering work in the early childhood special education field. As Executive Director (Emeritus) of the Regional Intervention Program (RIP) from 1974 to 1997, Matt guided this innovative parent implemented support program for families with children with developmental challenges to become nationally recognized by multiple professional organizations for its excellent outcomes. Studies coauthored by Matt on the effectiveness of RIP have been singled out as among the most significant contributions in the entire history of children’s disorders. Under Matt’s leadership, RIP expanded to multiple sites throughout Tennessee, other states and countries.
From 1997 to 2011, Matt served as Director of Early Childhood Programs for Tennessee Voices for Children, where he championed statewide advocacy, training, and consultation for young children and their families. In the last two decades of his career, Matt was also a senior faculty member on the National Center of Pyramid Model Innovations, a national and international initiative to bring evidence-based practice to early care and educational settings. His professional life was marked by vision and impact. Thousands of children and parents were supported and found lasting positive change because of his life’s work. Matt received numerous awards in recognition of his visionary leadership in the early childhood field.
Matt’s personal life was marked by his gentle personality and a natural way with children—patient, playful, and sincerely interested in their worlds. He also was a personal and professional mentor to all of those around him. He loved gathering people together, listening, telling the perfect story at the perfect moment, all while offering encouragement without fanfare.
Music was another of Matt’s great joys. He was the owner of Matt Timm Music, LLC for more than 20 years, working in artist management and music publishing, and he continued to play and learn instruments throughout his life. Friends and colleagues remember the way his eyes lit up when music was near—whether he was performing, collaborating or appreciating a well written song.
Matt also brought humor when needed: quick wit, dry sparkle, and talent for gentle, well-timed laughter that could dissolve tension and draw people closer. He believed in looking honestly at the world while choosing kindness. He encouraged others to stay curious, to check assumptions, and to keep fairness at the center of one’s heart.
Matt is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his son Joshua (Sarah); grandchildren Suzanna Rose and Luke Timm; his siblings Carolyn Spillers (David), Joel Timm (Kri), Elizabeth Selby (John), Jonathan Timm (Cyndi), and Tori Taff (Russ); many nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and former students who loved him deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents Donald Burton Timm and Alexine Timm.
A celebration of Matt’s life will be held (details to be announced). In lieu of flowers, the family invites memorial gifts to be made to The Regional Intervention Program Advisory Board, 5020 Darlington Drive, Nashville, TN 37211, MusiCares Development, 3030 Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90404 or Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson Street, Nashville, TN 37203.
Dr. Matthew A. Timm leaves behind a legacy of compassion in action. A life that proved scholarship can be gentle, leadership can be humble, and love for children can change the world. He will be missed beyond words, and remembered with gratitude, laughter, and enduring affection.
