Cherylie Anne Porterfield McFadden of Grapevine passed away peacefully on the morning of November 12, 2022, in Dallas, Texas after enduring a lengthy disease. She was born on September 24, 1938, in Littlefield, Texas, the daughter of Glenn Denson Porterfield and Willie Margaret Dodd. Mr. Porterfield worked as a pumper in the oil fields of Texas, and the Porterfields moved from Littlefield to Blessing, Texas and eventually to Snyder, Texas where Anne graduated from Snyder High School in 1956 where she was active in the Commercial Club, choir and was voted Choral Favorite.
Anne lived her entire life unselfishly devoted to others, especially her family. She deeply loved her father, Glenn, who passed away in 1995. She had a strong faith in God and Jesus Christ, regularly taught Sunday school, was active in her childrens' education and activities, and volunteered at numerous charitable functions and organizations. To those around her, Anne was at once kind, unselfish and empathetic, yet she was also fearless and the bedrock of the family in times of crisis or stress. She was a strict parent, but also taught her children that nonsensical authority and rules should be ignored. Her feelings were never hidden, and one always knew where they stood with Anne. She loved living things and the natural world and enjoyed tending her flower and vegetable gardens. She loved music, played the piano, enjoyed symphony, and was a member of volunteer singing groups that visited local nursing homes. One of her greatest gifts was her ability to identify and nurture the talents of her children, grandchildren, and students. She inspired creativity and let her children exercise their imaginations through experimental cooking recipes, making messes, digging holes in the backyard, building treehouses, visiting the local planetarium, and even skipping school to take day trips to State parks.
Anne was the first of her family to attend, and graduate, college. She attended Abilene Christian College, graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She began her teaching career in San Angelo, Texas. There, she met John David McFadden shortly after his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army. Anne and David married at Eastside Church of Christ in Snyder Texas in 1960. They moved to Abilene, Texas for David to attend ACC, and Anne supported the family as a 2nd grade teacher at Long Elementary in Abilene. Following the birth of their first child, Terry, Anne paused her teaching career for 25 years and stayed home to raise her three children until the youngest was a senior in High School. She then taught at Crockett Elementary in Midland, Texas, for several years before retiring to again focus her energy on her offspring – this time her grandchildren. She and David then moved to Grapevine, Texas in 2003 to be closer to her children and grandchildren. They attended Golf Course Road Church of Christ and Fairmont Park Church of Christ in Midland, Texas before moving to Grapevine whereupon they attended Grapevine Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband David, her three children, David Glenn McFadden, Amy Ruth McFadden, and Terry McFadden, by seven grandchildren, and her sister Karen.
A memorial service will be held at the Grapevine Botanical Garden, Bessie Mitchell House, December 21, 2022 from 4:30-6:30.
