Thomas John McCorry (known as George to his family and friends in England) passed away at the VA Hospital in Seattle on Wednesday, February 24th, 2021 from complications brought on by Lewy Bodies Dementia. Tom fought a valiant fight against his disease that was diagnosed in the fall of 2017. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kathy McCorry; two sons, Frank and Patrick; and his daughter in law, Brenda Valverde. Unfortunately, Tom lost his middle son Michael to COVID in mid-January.
After a stint in the Army and a career with Ford Automotive Company Tom found his true passion – the arts!
As an actor, writer, and director he was a true entertainer. He filled our lives with stories from a life well lived and tall tales from that creative mind of his.
Tom loved life and making sure everyone around him loved it too.
Kathy called him Shanachie: "A skilled teller of tales or legends, especially Gaelic ones." She said: “We never lacked for entertainment. He could keep everyone smiling for hours just by telling stories of his youth or by “rewriting” familiar stories as he spun them into comedies.”
Tom lives-on in films and television shows such as: Macarthur, Babe, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, Picture of Dorian Gray (the remake), McCloud, and Barretta. He loved being on stage. Live audiences fed his soul in ways that film could not. He wowed audiences in everything from musicals, to drama, Shakespeare and of course in comedies. Tom’s time on stage lead to directing where he found equal success. Coronado Playhouse in Coronado CA gave him his start and he never looked back. As time went on, he preferred directing to acting. His desire to bring more comedy to the stage drove him to begin writing his own plays. Nine out of his eleven plays have been professionally produced. Tom had the joy and honor of directing the world premier for all but one of them.
He was most proud of the last piece he wrote, a novel about his time growing up in London during WWII. Coston’s Lane Adventures highlights the fact that he was born with a beautifully created and talented mind that took him on great adventures as a child. It continued throughout his life, taking listeners on fabulous flights of fancy without ever leaving their seats. Everyone who knew him grew to love and appreciate his special gift. It is that gift we shall miss the most.
