After a long bout with dementia, Lawrence David Lohmeyer Sr (age 81) passed away in his sleep on February 16. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bonnie, his two sons Larry Jr. and Michael, two daughters-in-law, Bonnie and Jennifer, 2 grandsons, Isaac and Noah, two step-grandsons, Jordan and Ethan, and a grand dog Toby. He was a Pedricktown boy, born and raised. In fact the only time he wasn't living in Pedricktown was 2 years in Pennsville, some time in Florida, and the last 3 years in Millville.
Larry was a DuPont retiree with 35 years of service retiring in the year 2000. He was a printer for DuPont and he loved his work. He always provided a pad that he printed up entitled "Things to do today" attached to completed print jobs. While working at DuPont, every week we would meet up with the Lunch Bunch, a group of Friends who were also employees of DuPont.
His greatest love (playing 2* only to his wife and family) was fishing. He always said he felt closer to God in his boat than in any building and I can't remember a time when fishing wasn't a major part of his almost daily activities. If there was any water around, he would find it and fish. He always carried a spare rod in the back of the car. He was a lifetime member of BASS and he was a member of the team who established the BASS Federation of NJ.
Larry loved lighthouses and seagulls. He drew them on every placemat in every restaurant he dined in. He built his own lighthouse in 2007 on Lohmeyer Point (as neighbors called it) in Haines City, FL. And its still there today.
He loved cars, especially Mustangs. He held onto cars so long, that all of our cars had names and were members of the family. He was a Ford man most of his life, but in his older years praised only Hondas, since our son, Michael, the auto mechanic, convinced him they were the best. He loved to wash cars and if you drove over to visit, when you came out of the house your car was clean. He also loved his lawn. And he figured out that when you wash your car on the grass it served two purposes. The result being our lawn was the prettiest yard in the area and neighbors used our yard to take photos for graduation/proms..
He dabbled in real estate for several years but gave it up when we were close to retiring and sold our last property to our son, Larry-
He loved music, pretty much any kind and he could whistle a tune better than anybody I know Of course, he preferred old time Rock and Roll and could do the twist and stomp with the best of them.
He loved telling jokes and many a night was passed (especially when we were young and money was tight) between his Good Friend Jack and himself just telling jokes all evening. Even his nieces and nephews remember the "corny" jokes he told.
He loved playing cards with his friends. We played several times a week, and always enjoyed the friendships and challenge of the games we played.
Another of his favorite pastimes was his love of community and patrolling (CAP- Citizens Assisting Police) while we lived in Florida. He was very proud of the sheriff's program and being a part of it.
Visitors are welcome on Saturday, February 28th, at 10am, at the Hudson Methodist Church in Pedricktown, where Larry grew up, followed by a memorial service at 11am. All are invited to attend a luncheon at the Church after the service.
At Larry's request, all those attending the service should bring a joke to tell.
