John Joseph Pound

John passed away on November 30, 2025. Born in Rochester, New York on August 5, 1952, to Louis and Helen Pound. He was most recently a resident of Salt Lake City, Utah. John lived a life defined by service, kindness, and unwavering devotion to the people he loved.

John was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam war. After his service, he built a long and steady career as a federal employee. He worked with the Veteran’s Administration mostly. He was a canteen chief and purchasing agent. He also took a few years to be self-employed. He also worked for the Department of the Interior, and most recently for the US Forest Service. He brought his work ethic and determination to everything he pursued. He moved a lot in pursuit of new adventures and climbed the ladder of promotions.

John was a person to take on a new place to live and explore. He lived in New York, California (in a few different places), Washington, Montana, Utah (three different times), South Dakota, and Arizona.

John married the love of his life, Donna, with whom he shared 39 years of marriage until her passing in 2016. They were married the day after he turned 25. Which was August 6, 1977. Together they raised two sons: Joseph (Jenny) and Michael (Val). He enjoyed watching them grow into adults and raising kids of their own. He loved spoiling his grandchildren along with his many nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his sons and their wives, his brother Howard; his cherished grandchildren Danika (Michael and Val), Mikey (Michael and Val), Robert (Joseph and Jenny), and Ruby (Joseph and Jenny). Also, his many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his wife Donna, his brothers Chuck and Robert. His other “brother” Robert; and his parents, Louis and Helen.

A man of many interests, John found joy in the outdoors. Fishing, camping, riding dirt bikes, biking, and gardening. He always took pride in maintaining a beautiful yard. He liked working on vehicles, traveling to visit family. Happily taking on projects around their homes when he visited. John’s generous heart extended to every generation. He also had a special bond with dogs, a connection even they seemed instinctively to feel.

John was a life-long sports fan. Cheering faithfully for the A’s, Raiders, and Lakers. As a youth and young man, he watched UCLA become a powerhouse with John Wooden as the coach. After moving to Utah, he became a huge Utah Utes football fan. He would attend sporting events whenever he had the chance. In his youth, he was an outstanding athlete. A track and gymnastics star, holder of several school track records. Also, a recipient of the

Presidential Physical Fitness Award. He also won a city-wide billiards tournament in high school.

Curious and endlessly conversational, John enjoyed talking to everyone about any subject. He kept up with the news. Read the newspaper and watched the news every day. He never lost his love of books, movies, and especially music. He could name countless songs from just the first few notes. He also enjoyed seeing his favorite bands in concert.

Above all, he was a God-fearing man whose regular church attendance reflected the faith that grounded his life. He took on several roles in his church service.

John moved through the world with kindness, loyalty, humor, and humility. He leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and service. His family and all who knew him will carry his memory in their hearts always.
