Dewey attended Southern Methodist University and Texas Tech University before acceptance to Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas. He graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1975.
Dr. Newbold opened a General Dentistry practice in Richardson, Texas and practiced there for 6 years before making the decision to return to Baylor to pursue his Master of Science in Dentistry Periodontics.
Following graduation in 1984, Dewey, his wife, Sharon and daughter, Ashley moved to San Antonio, Texas.
In San Antonio, he had a private practice for many years, and he was a professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in the Periodontics Department where he gave lectures and mentored the residents.
Dr. Newbold began working full time at the Audie Murphy VA Hospital Dental Service as their only Periodontist. One of his great joys was the ability to help our nation’s veterans and to hear their stories. In addition, the residents from UTHSC would rotate through the VA so Dr. Newbold was able to stay connected to their Periodontal program as well.
In 2016, after more than 40 years in dentistry, including 30 years with UTHSC and the VA, Dr. Newbold decided it was time to retire. But full-time retirement was not for him, so he returned part-time to the VA for several more years.
Dewey was very active in his church, Western Hills Christian Church, where he served several terms as Chairman of the Board, as an Elder, and Chaired and served on many committees. He also enjoyed running the video booth for worship services, events and began streaming the online service.
He was an avid fan of NASCAR and loved classic cars. He enjoyed flying radio-controlled airplanes and running model trains. He later was interested in cycling and for several years, took part in the MS 150 Bike to the Beach from San Antonio to Corpus Christi.
Dewey will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband and father, a supportive and wise grandfather and as a kind, strong, and gentle man. He was a loyal friend and was admired by his colleagues as a gifted clinician, and a kind and patient instructor, always willing to help.
Dewey is preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Carolyn Newbold and his sister, Cheryl.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughter, Ashley Clower; son-in-law, Clayton Clower; grandsons, Jack Denver Clower and Bryce Allen Clower; and his loyal dog, Gunner.
A Celebration of Life Service will be at Western Hills Christian Church on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon to follow.
