Jim Myers passed away suddenly after a long illness on Sunday, July 27, 2025, four days shy of his 78th birthday.
He is survived by his wife, Joann Lassus, daughters Pleshette McGrady, Lisa Myers-Bazoge (Jeff), grandsons Ronnie Bazoge (Megan) and Nick Bazoge, and his great granddaughter Shea. His brother Rick Myers (Debbie), sisters Gale Cruz (Mario) and Diane Causey (Andrew), nieces and nephews Darcy Bell-Myers (Bruce), Jesse Myers (Marilyn), Amber Tonry (Joey), Andrew, Anthony, and Anisha Causey. Preceded in death by his son, Jamie (2008).
As Mookie Barker, he has fans around the world (ironically including Germany) from his roles in the TV series, “The King of Queens” and his film roles in “Mall Cop” and “Here Comes the Boom”. As Klaus Myers, he has fans from his 30+ years as a comedian; and as Jim Myers, he has countless friends, all of whom have their own “Myers stories”. This is mine:
I was at East Side Comedy Club in Huntington, NY. One of my friends had just finished her open mic set, and Jim was talking to her, praising her (I found out later that he was one of the few comics of his stature to even pay attention to anyone new, much less encourage them, which he did often). She was very funny but didn’t have a lot of confidence at that point so I walked over to chime in about what a good set she had. Jim stopped talking and turned to me, with a cold stare in his eyes. “We were talking.” And then he turned away. I don’t remember if I knew this about him at the time, and he didn’t know me at all, but the game was on. I walked over and sat down at the bar, trying to look dejected (which I actually kind of was.) He came over to me and apologized when he saw the look in my face, saying he was just kidding. I elbowed him in the ribs and told him to go F himself, and that was the first time I heard the famous Myers cackle. Getting him to laugh out loud, the first time I met him, is still a point of pride.
It will take some time, but eventually these last years of illness and pain will fade, and it will be stories like that that will carry me through. Jim was the funniest person I ever knew, and by far the kindest, and the person I loved the most. Rest now.
